Charlie bit my finger!

Originally posted in 2007, "Charlie Bit My finger" almost never made it online. The father of the titular Charlie simply wanted to share the family video with the boys' godfather. However, the file size was too big to send via email, so he posted it to Youtube. Although the original posting of the video is currently set to private, it was last listed at over 897 million views.

About

a screenshot of the Youtube homepage from the year 2005

It's been a long time since videos first began going viral online, even before Youtube first debuted in 2005. Since then, the concept of a "viral video" evolved to mean a video that spreads similarly to a virus as users share it with one another.

Though there were other video-sharing sites before 2005, Youtube exploded in popularity due to its ease of use and strong platform for users to upload their own content. Eventually, more commercialized content became popular, such as professional music videos, movie and television clips, film trailers, etc. However, user-generated content remains one of the main genres of viral-videos.

Over time, more platforms have gained popularity for video sharing. These include Vine, Tiktok, Instagram, Vimeo, and more. Youtube has introduced new formats to compete with a more diverse market (such as Youtube Shorts), and it still remains one of the most popular platforms for video content. Although this site is not exclusively restricted to Youtube content, it is the source of most of our videos since many famous (now old enough to be "classic") viral videos were originally created there. We hope you enjoy!
